First Things First, Where is Nürnberg, Germany?

Nuremberg, or Nürnberg in German, is located in the state of Bavaria in southern Germany. This historic city sits on the Pegnitz River and the Main-Danube Canal, making it a charming destination with both medieval and modern attractions. Nürnberg is about a two-hour drive north of Munich and is easily accessible by train, car, or even by air via the Nürnberg Airport. Its central location in Europe also makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the continent, especially if you are traveling around Germany by train.

Why Go To Nürnberg, Germany?

Nürnberg is a must-visit for so many reasons! Here are just a few:

Rich History | With its medieval architecture, Nürnberg Castle, and historic city walls, the city offers a fascinating glimpse into Germany’s past. It’s also famous for its role in the Nürnberg Trials post-World War II.

Cultural Hub | The city is brimming with museums and art galleries. Don’t miss the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which houses the largest collection of German art and cultural artifacts.

Christmas! | Nuremberg is renowned for its Christkindlesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world. The festive atmosphere, mulled wine, and gingerbread cookies are truly magical and it’s one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe.

Culinary Delights | Nürnberg’s food scene is vibrant and diverse, offering everything from traditional Franconian dishes to modern culinary treats! The city is particularly famous for its Nürnberg sausages and Lebkuchen, aka German gingerbread.

Beautiful Scenery | You can stroll along the picturesque Pegnitz River, relax in the city’s many parks, or explore the nearby Franconian Switzerland, a region known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just looking for a beautiful place to explore, Nürnberg has something for everyone.

The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Nürnberg, Germany (A Foodie Guide)

Bratwursthäsle

Address: Rathauspl. 1, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $ | Traditional German Sausages

This place is a Nürnberg institution, and honestly, you can’t leave without eating here at least once. It’s the home of the famous Drei im Weggla—three little Nürnberger sausages tucked into a bun with mustard. The vibe is very traditional and rustic, with wood-paneled interiors and a busy, buzzy (and smoky) atmosphere. Grab a sausage sandwich to go, or sit down inside with a beer for the full experience. It’s simple, classic, and oh-so Nürnberg.

Imperial by Alexander Herrmann & Michi Seitz

Address: Königstraße 70, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $$$

If you’re in the mood to dress up and treat yourself, Imperial is where you go. This Michelin-starred spot takes Franconian flavors and gives them a super modern and creative spin. The plating is gorgeous, but it’s not stuffy which I am a huge fan of. It feels special and celebratory — and perfect for a birthday, anniversary, or just a “because I deserve it” kind of night during your travels.

Atlantik Döner

Address: Karolinenstraße 45 Brunnengasse Ecke, Krebsgasse, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $ | Doner kebabs, pide & Turkish-style pizza

Sometimes the best meals are the ones you don’t overthink. Atlantik Döner is that kind of place — quick, filling, and ridiculously satisfying after a long day of exploring. The bread is freshly made on the spot, the meat is tender, and the fresh veggies and sauces pull everything together.

SUNDAYS

Address: Pirckheimerstraße 112, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Breakfast and brunch with vegan options.

A great brunch spot featuring sourdough, freshly baked pastries, and the best cappuccino in the area, trust me! Plus they have oat, coconut, and lactose-free milk. Their eggs benedict on brioche, with a miso hollandaise is my absolute favorite.

Restauration Kopernikus

Address: Hintere Insel Schütt 34, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Old-fashioned German and Polish cuisine.

This spot is a little hidden gem serving German and Polish comfort food. The pierogis are worth the visit alone, but everything here feels homemade in the best way. The setting is casual and welcoming, with a tavern-like feel, and it’s a nice change of pace if you want something beyond the usual Franconian dishes.

Mano

Address: Pirckheimerstraße 112, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Breakfast and brunch with vegan options.

Everything is farm-to-table inspired, the portions are generous, and the dishes are creative without being over the top. I love that they also have a really nice natural wine selection and good non-alcoholic options, which is surprisingly hard to find sometimes. It’s fun, unfussy, and a great place to share plates with friends. I would say this is a must-try when you are in Nürnberg, Germany!

Restaurant Heilig-Geist-Haus

Address: Spitalgasse 16, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Regional Food (home of my favorite Schnitzel!)

Don’t let the 4.2 star rating deter you from eating here. This is actually one of my favorite spots in the city for Wiener schnitzel. The restaurant is in a historic old tavern in the city center, and the vibe is very “classic Nürnberg” with vaulted ceilings and wood beams. The food is regional, the beer is flowing, and it just feels authentic.

Monki Ramen

Address: Königstraße 41, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Japanese noodle soup.

I always think it’s so (funny? interesting? random?) that there are at least a dozen ramen spots in the city. It’s a small city, so the amount always surprises me. I’ve tried a bunch, and Monki is my favorite. Their tantanmen ramen is rich, spicy, and super comforting. It’s exactly what you want on a cold, rainy day.

Einzimmer Küche Bar

Address: Schustergasse 10, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$$ | Changing menu of regional dishes

This is one of those small, special restaurants where everything feels intentional. The focus is on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and the menu changes often. It’s on the fancier side, but the food is thoughtful and so beautifully done. If you’re looking for a “wow” meal in Nürnberg, this is where you go.

Ganesha Restaurant Nürnberg

Address: Winklerstraße 3, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Indian

There is nothing more I love than Indian food for lunch. They don’t have a lunch buffet (I haven’t been able to find one in the city), but they do have a lunch menu where you can get tikka masala, channa masala, or whatever else suits your fancy for under €18. Their crispy butter duck is one of my favorite dishes ever!

Restaurant Bar Cafe Luftsprung

Address: Unterer Bergauerpl. 10, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Schnitzel, salads & desserts, plus breakfast, at an elegant 19th-century cafe adorned with murals.

Right by the river, Café Luftsprung has major cozy café vibes that make it such a good mid-day stop. I love coming here after walking around the old town when I need a break from all the sausages and schnitzels. Their salads are amazing—yes, I’m hyping up salads in Germany because fresh veggies can be hard to find on most menus! If you’re traveling for more than a few days, this is the spot where you’ll start craving something green and fresh, and Café Luftsprung totally delivers.

Bars in Nuremberg

Vintage Bar

Address: Irrerstraße 5, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Cocktail bar

Right across the street from 075 is this cozy cocktail bar. It’s dimly lit and moody, the kind of place that’s perfect in the winter when you want to curl up with something strong and well-balanced. It feels intimate and romantic, but also relaxed enough for a casual night with friends.

075 Weinbar & Handel

Address: Weinmarkt 14, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Natural wine bar

If you love wine, especially natural wine, you’ll adore this spot. It’s stylish, laid-back, and the staff is super knowledgeable. You can tell they genuinely love what they’re pouring, and it makes the whole experience feel like you’re discovering something new. Perfect for a girls’ night out or a date.

Die Rote Bar

Address: Peter-Vischer-Straße 3, 90403 Nürnberg, Germany | $$ | Cocktail bar

If you’re into cocktails, Die Rote Bar will be your happy place. It has this retro, moody vibe with dim lighting and plush interiors that make it feel super chic but not pretentious. The drinks are beautifully made (not just your standard gin & tonic situation), and it’s such a fun place to start a night out.

Dessert, because why not!

Lo3 Lorenzer Eiswerkstatt

Address: Lorenzer Pl. 3, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $ | Ice cream

My favorite ice cream in Nürnberg, Germany, especially after a day exploring! They have inventive flavors that are regional and organic.

Cinnamood

Address: Breite G. 32, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany | $ | Cinnamon rolls

This is honestly on the list because living in Switzerland I miss a truly good cinnamon roll that doesn’t cost 12 dollars. Cinnamood is a chain in Europe (think Cinnabon, but with a bunch of different flavors). We always grab a vegan cinnamon, along with whatever seasonal flavor they have at the time and they are sweet, gooey, and just fabulous.

That’s my round-up of the best places to eat and drink in Nürnberg! From bratwurst in a bun to cozy wine bars and even a cinnamon roll stop, this city seriously surprised me with how much good food there is packed into such a small area. I hope this list makes it easier (and way more fun) for you to plan where to eat in Nürnberg, Germany. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to try a little bit of everything.

Save this post for your trip—you’ll thank yourself later when you’re wandering the old town and suddenly starving!
