There are some things that everyone misses from their home country, and for many Americans living abroad, canned pumpkin is one of those elusive items. Whether it’s for making a classic pumpkin pie or adding a touch of autumn to your recipes, canned pumpkin can be surprisingly hard to find in Europe.
I haven’t had much luck finding canned pumpkin in Switzerland, so if you’re based here like I am, this guide is for you. Luckily, Germany has several options that are just a short drive away. Many of these spots can be reached from various places in Switzerland (Zurich is my home base) in around an hour. So, grab your keys and make a little day trip out of it!
What is Pumpkin Puree Called in German?
If you re searching the store for canned pumpkin in Germany, you’ll want to be on the lookout for ‘kürbispüree‘. This is just puréed pumpkin that will resemble a similar texture and taste to the canned pumpkin you are familiar with.

#1. DM
DM is probably the easiest place to find canned pumpkin, and the best! It does the trick and makes a delicious pumpkin pie. Plus, it’s very affordable at under 2 euros!
#2. American Store and British Empire
If you live near or are visiting Nuremberg, you’re in luck. In the heart of Nuremberg, you’ll find the American Store and British Empire. This store stocks the tried and true Libby’s canned pumpkin. It’s a bit pricier at over 5 euros, but it’s worth every penny for that authentic pumpkin taste.
#3. The American Store (online)
I must admit, I’m not usually a fan of these types of stores because they often sell American foods that are full of junk. As a holistic health and nutrition coach, I have strong feelings about these things. However, if you’re craving authentic canned pumpkin, The American Store online is a solid option. The prices are reasonable, and the shipping is quick.

Expat Tip: This is often sold out, but I suggest you check in off-season’s and stock up when it comes online!
DIY Alternative: Homemade Pumpkin Puree
If all else fails and you can’t get your hands on canned pumpkin, making your own pumpkin puree is a viable alternative. It’s fairly simple, and why I don’t just suggest doing this in the first place is we don’t aways have the time! But here’s what you can do to make your own. Simply roast a sugar pumpkin (or any sweet, orange-fleshed squash), scoop out the flesh, and blend it until smooth. You can freeze any leftovers for future use.
