We’re already two vacations in this summer, and I’ve realized (again) just how important it is to pack the right things when it comes to hot, busy summer travel. This guide shares my top 10 summer travel essentials — from comfortable shoes to little things that make a big difference.

Now, I love reading other people’s travel blogs and packing guides. But if I’m being honest, I usually finish reading those lists thinking, seriously? Half the time they’re filled with unnecessary gadgets, five versions of the same thing, or items no one’s realistically packing in a carry-on. To each their own, but I’ve learned that when it comes to summer travel, less is more… as long as you bring the right things.
This list is a personal roundup of things I’ve found truly essential after years of summer trips — plus two big vacations already this season that made me go, yep, I’ve got this down. These are the things that made travel easier, more comfortable, and way more enjoyable. Let’s get into it:
My Top 10 Essentials for Summer Travel
#10. Sunscreen
I am the type that always says, “let’s just pick up some sunscreen once we get there”, only to end up searching for a drugstore and ultimately ending up sunburnt on the first day. I suggest packing sunscreen with your just pop it into your checked bag, and save yourself the hassle. Shop Here!
#9. Portable Fan
I always thought this was just a thing for….old people? Sorry, but it’s true! However after our last trip to London, and sweating (and almost passing out) on the tube, I realized how essential this is. This one has over 17k reviews and is under $20!
#8. A Lightweight Crossbody Bag
You need a bag that doesn’t make you sweat, can fit your phone, fan, and lip balm, and ideally zips shut (looking at you, pickpockets). I swear by a small crossbody or belt bag that I can wear close to my body — and bonus if it looks cute in photos. I’ve written about this bag again (and again), but it’s honestly the best bag you can buy under $150 that is perfect for travel, and will last you YEASRS. #7. Electrolyte Packets
When you’re sweating all day in the sun, walking for miles, and drinking Aperol Spritzes at lunch, staying hydrated is not as easy as it sounds. I throw a few electrolyte packets in my bag and add one to my water bottle when I need a little boost. They seriously help with jet lag too. Shop my favorite electrolytes here!
#6. A Good Pair of Walkable Sandals
You don’t need five pairs of shoes. You just need one or two that are actually walkable. Think: supportive, breathable, and something that doesn’t make your feet hate you after 10,000+ steps. I rotate between a solid pair of sandals and one sneaker, and that’s it. Shop my Tevas!
#5. Linen or Cotton Button-Down Shirt
The easiest thing to throw over a tank top, swimsuit, or dress. It works for sun protection, chilly trains or planes, and even as a beach cover-up. A white linen shirt has become my go-to layering piece. This is my favorite linen shirt for under $50.
#4. A Travel-Friendly Hat
The sun is no joke in summer — and I like having a hat that protects my face without being a pain to pack. I go for something packable or crushable that still holds its shape. Bonus if it makes your outfits look more pulled together with zero effort. Shop this chic AND packable sunhat!
#3. A Refillable Water Bottle
Yes, it’s obvious. But seriously — airports, long days out, and 30°C+ heat? Bring a water bottle you actually like carrying around. I’ve started packing a collapsible one for space, or something super lightweight, and it makes such a difference. I love this 20oz Owala.
#2. Microfiber or Packable Towel
Whether you’re heading to the beach, a lake, or even just staying somewhere without great towels, a lightweight microfiber towel always comes in handy. It dries quickly, folds down super small, and has saved me more than once when I didn’t expect to need a towel at all. I use it for beach days, picnics, or even as a makeshift blanket on train rides. Way more useful than you’d expect. This quick-dry towel is my favorite!
#1. Tinted SPF for the Face
I always pack a tinted SPF because it protects better than regular sunscreen. It blocks not just sunburn rays (UVB) but also aging rays (UVA) and even some light that can cause dark spots. Plus, it gives light coverage without the white cast — so it looks good and feels light. I use it instead of foundation when I travel, and it’s easy to reapply on the go. Option #1 | Option #2
Shop My Summer Travel Essentials!
You don’t need to pack your entire wardrobe or bring five “just in case” items. Summer travel is sweaty, busy, and fun — and with the right essentials, it can be so much smoother. These are the things I always reach for, and the ones I’d recommend to anyone heading off on a summer trip.
