How to Dress for London in the Fall
I am sharing this post with you because maybe you are like me and have searched “outfits for fall” before your upcoming trip. I’ve said this before, but weather in Europe still throws me for a loop. One day it will be the weather will be super nice and the next so cold you can’t bear to leave the house. I’ve gone on my fair share of trips since we’ve move abroad and been horribly prepared for the weather, and that’s just no fun! So, take some advice from me when you are packing your fall outfits for London!
My biggest peace of advice for fall outfits in London is layering. With the right layers, you can stay comfortable no matter what the weather throws your way. And we all know that makes a trip more fun! London is also a place where you can dress causal, or dress up and from my experience, no one really cares either way. I’ve been super dressed up at a pub and had the time of my life, to wearing leggings at a great wine bar. I like to think of London as a place you can express yourself through your style in whatever way feels good to you!

Typical London Weather in Fall (aka Autumn)
London’s weather is famously unpredictable, which does add to its charm, but can be a bit tricky when planning your outfits and packing. Generally, you can expect mild temperatures throughout the year, but it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in one day.
Fall in London, or Autumn as they call it, which starts in September and goes through November, is characterized by cool temperatures and often rain. Here’s what you can usually expect:
- September: Mild temperatures, ranging from 13°C to 19°C (55°F to 66°F), with occasional sunny days.
- October: Cooler weather, with temperatures between 9°C and 15°C (48°F to 59°F). Rain becomes more frequent.
- November: Chilly, with temperatures dropping to between 5°C and 11°C (41°F to 52°F). Rain and overcast skies are the usual.

Cozy Layers
Layering, if I haven’t already said that enough, is key here. I actually didn’t know how important layering was for weather outside of Singapore and California (former homes of mine), and was shocked that you could experience so many different seasons in one day when we moved to Switzerland. Here are some perfect staples for layering in fall:
- Knit Sweaters: These are perfect for keeping warm and can be easily layered over shirts or under jackets. I love Zara and H&M for these staples.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: Basic long-sleeve tops in neutral colors are versatile and can be paired with almost anything.
- Blazers: Great for adding an extra layer without the bulk of a heavy coat. I like to opt for a wool blazer for warmth!
Warm Outerwear
A good coat is essential for London’s fall weather, and will elevate any outfit (I promise).
- Wool Coats: Classic and chic, a wool coat is perfect for both casual and dressy occasions.
- Trench Coats: Ideal for those wet, rainy days, a trench coat is both practical and stylish.
Bottoms
Think wide leg and barrel jeans for this fall, along with knit trousers to complete any look.
- Jeans: A pair of well-fitted jeans is a must-have. They’re comfortable and go with everything.
- Trousers: Stylish and comfortable, trousers can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I always back a black, wide leg pair to wear with sneaker or heels for a night out!
Footwear
Comfortable and weather-appropriate shoes are essential for exploring London.
- Sneakers: A good pair of sneakers is a must for sightseeing and long walks, and can be dressed up or down.
- Boots: Keep your feet dry during London’s rainy days, as well as super easy to dress up for a night out.
Accessories
Don’t forget to pack some essential accessories to complete your outfits and elevate your look.
- Scarves: A cozy scarf can add warmth and style to any outfit.
- Hats: Keep your head warm with a stylish beanie or beret. I always have a beanie in my purse in-case it rains and my hair gets destroyed (frizzy hair girl here!).
- Umbrella: A compact umbrella is a must-have for those rainy days.
- Versatile purse: I love a good leather purse to complete any outfit (and stash my polaroid camera for pics along the way).

London Outfit Ideas: #1. Causal Day Exploring The City
This is one of my favorite types of outfits for London in the fall. I wouldn’t suggest wearing these shoes for the first time during a full day in London, but I’ve broken mine in and find them super comfy to walk in. You can easily switch out these flats for another pair you know and love. (If you live in the US I would order red Rothy’s!) We can’t get those in Switzerland right now, but I am dying for a pair. Depending on weather too, you can wear a tank top under long sleeves for some added warmth. #layeringseason
