At the start of a new year, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of big goals and all the things you think you “should” be doing. But as a wise therapist once told me, “Don’t should on yourself.”
We often dive headfirst into January with grand plans—take running, for example. Maybe you decide to start strong and go for a three-mile run on January 1st. You crush it (go you!), but then the soreness sets in. One rest day turns into two… then three… and before you know it, January is over, and your running shoes are back in the closet. Sound familiar? I’ve been there too.
If you’d like me to write a post about setting realistic goals and actually sticking to them, drop a comment saying “goals”—I’d love to share my personal framework with you!
This year, though, I’m taking a different approach. Instead of aiming for huge, lofty goals, my focus is on something more meaningful: feeling grounded. To me, that means clarity, contentment, focus, and ease. It’s also about confidence, joy, and peace—the things I want to wholeheartedly welcome into 2025.
10 Simple Ways to Feel More Grounded
#1. Reduce Distractions
This is a big one. I get very easily distracted by, well, everything. For me, reducing distractions looks like clearing clutter—whether it’s tidying up my desk, doing the dishes, tackling laundry, or sorting through the endless notes I jot down everywhere. All of these things create a sense of unease when left unchecked.
To combat this, I’m committing to small, manageable habits: putting clutter away daily, doing laundry twice a week, and time-blocking my schedule to create focused work hours. It’s amazing how much lighter and grounded I feel when my space is clear.
#2. Establish a Morning Routine
This one has been a struggle for me, but let me tell you, the days I actually stick to my morning routine, I feel unstoppable. It’s like I’ve set the tone for the day, giving myself clarity and direction instead of stumbling through the hours. Whether it’s sipping coffee in silence, journaling, or stretching, finding a morning rhythm that works for you can make all the difference.
#3. Write Things Down
Sometimes the simplest actions have the biggest impact. Writing things down—whether it’s your to-do list, thoughts swirling in your head, or even your dreams—can help you feel less overwhelmed. Getting things out of your mind and onto paper makes everything feel more manageable and grounded.
#4. Food Nourishment
As a Holistic Health and Nutrition Coach, I believe food is one of the best tools we have to feel connected and at home in our bodies. For me, nourishment comes from vibrant, colorful foods—like bright smoothies, golden yellow dahls, and fiery red soups.
Take a moment to notice how different foods make you feel. Pay attention to the dishes that bring you comfort and energy. Food can be more than just fuel; it can be grounding and deeply nourishing.
#5. Self Nourishment
Think of this as intentional self-care. Self-nourishment is about actively doing things that fill your cup and make you feel whole, supported, and cared for. It’s not necessarily beauty-focused—it’s deeper and more personal.
For me, self-nourishment means taking a long bath with a good book, doing daily movement (shoutout to my favorite platform, Modern Body!), going for a run, or winding down with some quiet reading time. It doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional.
#6. Practice Mindful Breathing
I’ll admit, I’m not into the trendy “breathwork” movement, but I do believe in the power of simply pausing to breathe. Taking five deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, can do wonders for resetting your mind and body.
It’s free, simple, and effective. The next time you feel overwhelmed, give it a try—it might surprise you.
#7. Spend Time in Nature
Whether it’s a quick walk around the block, sitting by a lake, or hiking a trail, spending time outdoors helps you reconnect with the present moment.
I’ll be honest—I’m not great at this one. Working from home often means I can (don’t judge me) go days without stepping outside. But on the days I make an effort, even just walking during lunch, I feel a huge difference in my mental clarity and sense of grounding.
#8. Start a Journaling Routine
You don’t need to write pages and pages—a simple five minutes a day can work wonders. Whether it’s jotting down your thoughts, listing a few things you’re grateful for, or reflecting on the day, journaling is a powerful way to organize your mind and focus on the present.
#9. Connect with Others
This one is a work in progress for me. Living in Zurich, I don’t have a big community, but I know how powerful connection can be.
Friendships ground us in ways nothing else can. Even a small check-in with a close friend can bring comfort, support, and a sense of belonging. This year, I’m committed to cultivating more of that connection in my life.
#10. Reflect and Realign
At the end of the day, grounding yourself often comes back to reflection. Take time to pause and ask: What’s working for me? What’s not? How do I want to feel tomorrow, next week, or even next month? Remember, Grounding isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s personal and unique to you.
As we step into this new year, let’s remember that we don’t need to tackle everything at once or set ourselves up for burnout. Instead, we can focus on small, meaningful shifts that make us feel grounded and aligned with what truly matters.
For me, it’s about embracing clarity, contentment, and ease—qualities that create a solid foundation for everything else. Maybe for you, it’s something different, and that’s okay. What’s most important is to honor where you are right now and take it one step at a time.
So here’s to a 2025 filled with confidence, joy, and peace. Whatever your goals or intentions might be, I hope this year brings you closer to the life you truly want to live. I hope you’ve enjoy these 10 ways to feel more grounded in 2025. I’d love to know in the comments what you will be trying this year, or, what things personally ground you!
