The Best Self-Tanner: Tan Luxe Review + Tips for a Flawless Application!

If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “best self-tanner” at 11pm before a beach trip or big event, same. So today I’m sharing exactly why Tan-Luxe is my favorite, the three products I swear by, and some of my top tips for a natural, streak-free glow.

There is nothing that gives me a confidence boost like a fresh self-tan. I feel more even, more glowy, and honestly, just more me. I’ve tried a lot of self-tanners over the years (foam, mousse, drops, you name it), but the one I keep coming back to, and use weekly, is Tan-Luxe.

What Is Tan-Luxe?

Tan-Luxe is a UK-based brand that blends skincare with self-tanning. Instead of one-size-fits-all mousses or sprays, their formulas are made to be mixed into or used with your existing routine. Think tanning drops that you add to your favorite moisturizer or body lotion. It’s super customizable, easy to use, and leaves you with a really believable glow, like you just got back from a weekend in the sun (minus the sun damage)!

They’re also big on clean ingredients, cruelty-free formulas, and packaging that actually looks cute on your shelf, and doesn’t scream “self tan” to anyone that heads into your bathroom.

Does Tan Luxe Smell?

The big question, and honestly, the biggest turn-off when it comes to self-tanner. So, in all honestly, yes, Tan-Luxe does smell.

The products themselves smell nice when you first apply them. But as they develop, that classic self-tanner smell definitely starts to come through. It’s subtle and not nearly as strong as others I’ve used, but it’s still there. The good news is that it doesn’t linger. The scent fades after your next shower, and it doesn’t stick to your clothes or sheets. But if anyone tells you it’s completely odorless, they’re lying.

The Tan-Luxe Products I’ve Tried

Here’s what I’ve personally used and loved:

The Gradual Lotion

The Gradual is my favorite body tanner and even though it’s gradual, I find that after just one application I have the perfect amount of tan! If you’re new to self-tanning (or just want something low-maintenance), The Gradual is such a good place to start. It’s basically a daily body moisturizer that slowly builds a tan over time – no mixing, no fuss, and super forgiving if you’re worried about streaks.

It feels like a lightweight lotion, goes on smoothly, and doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. I like using it after showering, especially in the colder months when I want a little glow without committing to a full tan routine. Shop it here!

Tanning Tip: Before I apply this, I moisturize my elbows, knees, wrists, and armpits with a thick cream. I find that this helps the product layer super seamlessly and never gets too dark or patchy. Also, ALWAYS wash your hands after. This might say subtle, but it will seriously stain your hands!

Super Glow Body Hyaluronic Self-Tan Serum

This one is basically a hydrating body serum meets gradual tanner, and it’s now a staple in my routine. Think lightweight, fast-absorbing, and glow-enhancing, with the same skincare-first ingredients as the face version below. It builds a subtle tan over a few days and fades evenly, which is a big deal. I like to use this in-between days when I’ve used the Gradual to keep my tan looking fresh! Shop here!

Super Glow Hyaluronic Self-Tan Face Serum

This is the self-tanner I reach for when I want my skin to look healthy, glowy. It’s a gradual face self-tanner that feels just like a hydrating serum. Plus, it’s packed with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and vitamin E. I use it a few times a week (4–6 drops), and the glow builds naturally with zero streaks or breakouts. Shop here!

My Results with Tan-Luxe (Plus a Few Tips)

  • The glow looks totally natural | like I’ve just been on vacation.
  • It’s super buildable | You control how deep the tan gets based on how often you apply any of these products.
  • No patchiness when it fades | just a gradual return to my regular skin tone.
  • It plays well with my skincare routine | I’ve had no breakouts or irritation using it with serums or moisturizers.

Pro tip: I always exfoliate before applying to my body and apply it with a mitt for a streak-free finish.

What I Love About Tan-Luxe

  • No orange tones
  • Customizable color and super easy to use
  • Doesn’t stain clothes or sheets
  • Clean ingredients and cruelty-free
  • A little goes a long way

Things to Know Before You Buy

  • It’s definitely a splurge | The drops and lotion aren’t cheap, but they last a long time!
  • You need to exfoliate beforehand | If you don’t prep your skin, it might go on unevenly.
  • You’ll need to experiment a little | It took me a few tries to get the drop-to-moisturizer ratio just right.

Final Verdict: Is Tan-Luxe Worth It?

If you want a natural-looking tan without the drama of streaks, orange hands, or smelly formulas, Tan-Luxe is absolutely worth the investment! I’ve repurchased these products dozens of times and always have them on hand.

Whether you’re prepping for a vacation, want to glow in the middle of winter, or just feel a little more confident with some color, Tan-Luxe should be your go-to.
