Now, full disclosure—I’m from the U.S., so my idea of a “quick trip” might be a little different from yours. I’m used to driving long distances in a day, so some of these destinations might feel far, but trust me, they’re totally doable! We have a car, so this list is based on road trips, but you can easily take the train to all of them—just make sure to check schedules in advance so you don’t end up stranded somewhere (been there, done that). Driving in Switzerland (What You Need to Know)
If you’re planning to rent a car or road trip from Zurich, there are a few key things to know about driving in Switzerland. First, the roads here are immaculate, the signage is clear, and the scenery? Absolutely next level. But there are some important rules and quirks to keep in mind before hitting the road.
You Need a Vignette: To drive on Swiss highways, your car must have a vignette (toll sticker), which costs CHF 40 and is valid for the entire year. If you’re renting a car in Switzerland, it should already have one, but if you’re driving in from another country, you’ll need to buy one at the border or a gas station. Speed Limits & Fines: Speed limits are strictly enforced with cameras everywhere. The general limits are 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 120 km/h on highways, unless posted otherwise. Switzerland doesn’t mess around with speeding fines—going just a little over can get very expensive, very fast.
Winter Driving: If you’re traveling in winter, snow tires are a must, and some mountain passes may require chains. Many high-altitude roads close in winter, so always check conditions before heading out.
Parking Can Be Tricky: In cities like Zurich, parking is limited and pricey. Look for “blue zones”, where you can park for free with a parking disc (available at gas stations). Otherwise, expect to use public garages or designated pay parking areas.
Right of Way Rules: One of the biggest surprises for visitors is that cars coming from the right have the right of way, even if there’s no stop sign. Also, pedestrians always have the right of way at crosswalks, so be extra cautious when driving in cities.
Border Crossings: If you’re planning a day trip into France, Germany, Italy, or Austria, border crossings are usually smooth, especially within the Schengen Zone. Just make sure to carry your passport and check if your rental car company allows cross-border travel.

#1. Lucerne, Switzerland
If you only have time for one day trip, Lucerne should be it. Just an hour from Zurich, this lakeside city has everything—cobblestone streets, medieval bridges, and jaw-dropping mountain views. Walk across the Chapel Bridge, explore the Old Town, and take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even take the world’s steepest cogwheel train up to Mount Pilatus for insane panoramic views.
Train: ~50 min from Zurich HB
Car: ~45 min (52 km)
#2. Strasbourg, France
If you’re looking for a day trip from Zurich that feels like stepping into a storybook, Strasbourg is the place to go. This charming French city, right on the border of Germany, is packed with half-timbered houses, winding canals, and cozy cafés. The highlight? La Petite France, the most picturesque district, where colorful buildings reflect on the water and flower-adorned bridges create the perfect photo ops.
Beyond the fairytale vibes, Strasbourg has plenty to explore. Visit the Strasbourg Cathedral, one of the most stunning in Europe, and climb to the top for breathtaking city views. Stroll through Place Kléber, the lively central square, or stop by a traditional Alsatian winstub (wine tavern) to try flammkuchen (Alsatian-style pizza) and local Riesling wine. Strasbourg is easy to explore in a day, but it’ll leave you wanting to come back for more!

Travel Tip: I suggest heading here during Christmas, as Strasbourg has one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in all of Europe! If you miss it in winter, definitely visit in spring when the flowers are in bloom.

The Rhine Falls are Europe’s biggest waterfall! Located near Schaffhausen, Switzerland, these falls are seriously impressive, especially in spring and summer when the water flow is at its peak. You can take a boat ride to the rock in the middle of the falls, walk along scenic viewing platforms, or visit Schloss Laufen, a historic castle overlooking the falls.
Train: ~50 min to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall
Car: ~40 min (45 km)
#4. Bern
A lot of people skip Bern, but I think it’s a great little city. It’s the capital of Switzerland, and is full of charm. With its UNESCO-listed Old Town, the famous Zytglogge clock tower, and the bear park (yes, real bears live here!). Walk along the Aare River, check out the Rosengarten for epic city views, and stop by a traditional Swiss café for some Züpfe bread and coffee.

Car: ~1 hour 30 min (120 km)
#5. Milan
Want to cross Italy off your list? Milan is a totally doable day trip from Zurich! Spend the day indulging in Italian cuisine, shopping in the fashion capital of the world, and visiting iconic landmarks like the Duomo di Milano and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. If you’re a fan of art, don’t miss Da Vinci’s The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Train: ~3 hours 30 min
Car: ~3 hours 15 min (280 km)

#6. Appenzell – The Cutest Swiss Village
If you’re looking for that classic Swiss village charm, Appenzell is it. Picture colorful houses, rolling green hills, and adorable cheese shops. Wander through the charming Old Town, sample Appenzeller cheese, and if you’re up for a little adventure, hike to the Aescher Cliff Restaurant—one of the most Instagram-famous spots in Switzerland.

#7. Stuttgart
Germany is just a few hours away, and Stuttgart is a fantastic day trip if you love cars, castles, good food AND shopping! You can visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum, explore the Old Castle, and if you’re visiting in December, Stuttgart’s Christmas market is magical. Stuttgart is also surrounded by vineyards, so be sure to try some local Swabian wine. We head here often to go shopping at Metzingen – Europe’s largest outlet mall! I made a reel showcasing this and it has over 1 MILLION views! They have seriously amazing stores, as well as an oyster bar where you can sip on champagne and indulge in-between shops.

#8. Interlaken
Interlaken is the place to go if you want to try paragliding, skydiving, canyoning, or just exploring the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, this town is ridiculously scenic and offers some of the best outdoor adventures in Switzerland. Even if you’re not into extreme sports, taking a boat ride or hiking in the nearby Lauterbrunnen Valley is worth the trip.
Train: ~2 hours (via Bern)
Car: ~2 hours (120 km)
Travel Tips: If you are driving make sure to stop at the Trauffer Factory, home to the famous Swiss made wooden toys. They have a shop, as well as an interactive tour that’s fun for the whole family!
#9. Basel
If you’re a museum lover (or just appreciate a good food scene), Basel is a great day trip. This artsy city is home to 40+ museums, including the Kunstmuseum (one of the best art museums in Switzerland). Walk along the Rhine River, explore the historic Old Town, and don’t leave without trying a traditional Basler Läckerli (a local gingerbread cookie).

Car: ~1 hour 15 min (90 km)
#10. Konstanz
Just across the German border, Konstanz is a perfect mix of medieval charm, lakefront relaxation, and tax-free shopping. Stroll through the Old Town, where cobblestone streets lead to Konstanz Cathedral and historic squares lined with cafés. For a dose of history, visit the Council of Constance, or if you’re craving nature, take a boat ride on Lake Constance or explore the stunning gardens of Mainau Island (aka the “Flower Island”).
If you’re a foodie, don’t leave without trying Käsespätzle (cheesy noodles) or fresh fish from the lake. And since Konstanz is in Germany, it’s a great spot to pick up duty-free finds before heading back to Switzerland. Whether you’re after culture, relaxation, or just a pretty lakeside stroll, this easy day trip is well worth it!

Travel Tip: Grab an Italian inspired lunch at Il Boccone. Their pasta is one of my absolute favorites! They also have great outdoor seating area, and dogs are allowed.
#11. Adleboden
Adelboden is one of those underrated Swiss villages that feels like a dream and is one of our favorite cities in all of Switzerland. It’s a fantastic year-round destination, but in spring and summer, the hiking trails are next-level beautiful. Explore the stunning Engstligen Falls, go on a scenic cable car ride, or just wander through the cozy village with its alpine chalets. Oeschinensee is one of the most breathtaking lakes in Switzerland, with crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks. The best part? It’s an easy hike from Kandersteg. After a day of hiking, you can stay the night in a cozy mountain lodge and wake up to sunrise views over the lake—seriously magical. You can visit here for a day, but this is one of the only spots I suggest staying the night at because it’s super cute.
Train + Bus: ~2 hours 45 min (via Bern & Frutigen)
Car: ~2 hours (160 km)
Travel Tip: The Adler Adelboden and The Cambrian Adelboden are two fabulous hotels for a relaxing getaway. The restaurant at The Cambrian, called Bryn Willians is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Switzerland.

This famous alpine resort town is known for its high-end ski culture, luxury hotels, and jaw-dropping mountain views. But even if you’re not skiing, there’s plenty to do here year-round! Take a scenic stroll along Lake St. Moritz, ride the Muottas Muragl funicular for panoramic views, or relax at the Ovaverva Spa with its infinity pool overlooking the Alps. If you’re into food, don’t miss trying the classic Engadine nut tart (Nusstorte)—it’s a local specialty and so good.

For an extra scenic adventure, take a quick trip to Pontresina, a charming village just 10 minutes away. From here, you can hike to Morteratsch Glacier, visit the stunning Val Roseg, or hop on the Bernina Express, one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
