The Beer Scene in Zurich
My husband and I moved from Portland, Oregon two years ago, and to say we miss the local beer scene would be a huge understatement. We LOVE locally brewed beer, specifically IPA’s and very hoppy beer, and after spending time trying breweries all over the United States, we like to think we know our stuff.
Zurich might be renowned for its picturesque old town and stunning lake views, but there is a small (think very small), craft beer scene. The beer culture here can often leave you underwhelmed and wondering: “does a good beer here actually exist?” Trust me, I get that, and sure thought the only time I would ever drink a good beer again was on vacation. But, I knew there had to be some good beer out there, so I’ve gone through dozens of beer spots in Zurich, many of these being breweries, to find the best ones to share with you here today!
What is a Typical ‘Zurich Style Beer’?
Let’s chat the beer you’ll often find in Zurich first. One of the most popular styles of beer you’ll find in Zurich, and all around Switzerland, is the Zurich Lager. It’s a crisp and simple beer that’s very easy to drink. Another local favorite is the Züri Hell, a pale lager that’s smooth and easy to drink, reminiscent of a PBR. Now, I’ve written this guide because these are the beers you’ll find pretty much everywhere, and if you are like me, these don’t quite hit the spot. So instead, this guide is tailored to those who love a good IPA and hoppy beer, and I’ve found the best spots.
The Best Breweries in Zurich for (Seriously Good) Beer
Bierwerk Züri
Address: Gustav-Gull-Platz 10, 8004 Zürich
Bierwerk Züri is a must-visit for any beer lover in Zurich. It’s located in an industrial-style venue, right near Zurich HB, and is the perfect after work spot. Their IPA is a standout, bursting with hoppy goodness, and I know you’ll love it too. Their tap selection is smaller than most, but it rotates occasionally and has something for everyone. They also have a great selection of snacks – you’ve got to try their focaccia!
The International Beer Bar
Address: Luisenstrasse 7, 8005 Zürich
As the name suggests, The International Beer Bar specializes in beers from across the globe. Now, they don’t brew their own beer, but the spot would suggest otherwise as it feels very brewery-esque. They typically have around 7 beers on draft and a huge selection of cans and bottles to try. Plus, it’s a spot where you can order in English with no problems. It’s perfect for exploring new flavors or enjoying styles you already love. You’ll feel like you are at a tap room and find yourself ordering (at least a few) delicious beers.
Local Tip: They are open on Sunday’s which is not common in the city. This is a spot you can rely on, as they are open daily from 4pm-12pm.
Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer
Address: Werdmühlestrasse 4, 8001 Zürich
Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer is a joint inspired by NYC burgers and shakes, with locations all throughout Switzerland. While they are famous for their craft burgers, Black Tap also boasts an impressive beer selection – and it’s a favorite of mine! Nestled right in the heart of Bahnhofstrasse, this spot offers a variety of local and international brews. They feature a Switzerland brewery, Kitchen Brew, that makes an awesome American Pale Ale that you have to try!

Bierlab
Address: Grüngasse 7, 8004 Zürich
Located in the heart of Zurich, Bierlab is a cozy spot for true beer lovers. They feature beers their own beers, as well as beers from all over Europe, and the tap is constantly rotating. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to unwind with friends and try a new beer (or two).
They often have a West Coast IPA on tap which no matter what, I will always order.
Update: I was recently there and was super disappointed to see one of the bartenders be incredibly disrespectful to a new member on staff. They were very rude to the team member directly in front of us as we paid which we felt was strange. I typically don’t support business that don’t foster safe, inclusive, and respectful work environments, so unfortunately I won’t be back here.
Cheyenne
Address: Querstrasse 3, 8050 Zürich
Cheyenne, situated in the charming district of Oerlikon (our old neighborhood!) that offers a nice selection of beers from around the world. They aren’t a brewery, but hear me out. They typically have 8 beers on tap, featuring my favorite Laganitas IPA, as well as bottles like Corona, and Brauerei Oerlikon (that I will share more about below!). The rustic decor and friendly staff make it a welcoming spot to enjoy a pint after work or on the weekend. It’s a spot you’ll never hear food bloggers talk about, but trust me, it’s awesome.
Local Tip: Cheyenne also has a great food menu, and is home to one of my favorite burgers and wings in Zurich!
Brauerei Oerlikon
Address: Schärenmoosstrasse 105, 8052 Zürich
Brauerei Oerlikon is a gem in Zurich’s beer scene. This local brewery produces a variety of fantastic beers, with their IPA being my favorite! The brewery also offers tours, which is super fun. The friendly atmosphere and excellent brews make it a top recommendation.
Local Tip: Check out their website for events, as well as you can now invest in them and become a co-owner! It’s a super cool opportunity to help support a local business and invest in the future of Zurich’s beer scene!
Fork and Bottle
Address: Allmendstrasse 20, 8002 Zürich
Tucked away in a very unassuming location near the Sihl river, Fork and Bottle offers a super unique beer experience! This restaurant and pub focuses on farm-to-table cuisine, paired with an impressive beer selection. You can check it out here! Their craft beer menu features local and international options, with my top pick being the hoppy and aromatic Pale Ale. The beautiful garden seating area adds to the charm, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed Saturday afternoon.
Bier Factory Rapperswil
Address: Eichwiesstrasse 6, 8645 Jona SG
Okay, so this is not technically in Zurich, but Bier Factory needed to be included on this list. You can find their beer at various grocery stores and bars throughout Zurich, but checking out their taproom is definitely worth a visit! They have a pretty extensive menu and even feature seasonal flavors – for fall they have a Pumpkin Spice Ale all of my fall fans will love, as well as a Rosé lager for my wine lovers. Their space is also super unique, check out this disco ball!
Local Tip: The tap room is only open Thursday’s and Friday’s from 6-10pm, but don’t let that deter you! head over there after work, and you can order food in while you enjoy their beers.
Local Tip: You can do a tasting flight for 9 CHF (which is unheard of in the area) + you can order in food. Diamonds Burgers down the street serves up the BEST smash burgers and onions rings, you’ll fall in love.
