Hi, I’m Linds!

I’m an American living in Zurich, Switzerland for the past 3 years. On my blog, I love sharing honest and helpful travel guides, especially when it comes to food and things to do and see, because I know our travel time is precious! This 24-hour guide covers exactly how I’d recommend spending one day in Zurich, especially if you love good eats, beautiful views, and a relaxed, but fun day exploring. You’ll see all the top spots and won’t have to worry about “missing” anything.
How to Get Around Zurich?
Zurich is one of the easiest cities in Europe to navigate. The city is compact, walkable, and well-connected by public transport. Trams, buses, and trains run frequently and on time — you can easily get around using just public transport. I recommend grabbing a ZVV Day Pass or the Zurich Card (which includes unlimited public transport and museum entry discounts) for convenience. You can purchase tickets at any tram stop or directly through the SBB mobile app. For shorter distances, walking is lovely, especially around the lake and Old Town, and you’ll also find e-scooters and bikes via Lime or ZüriRollt apps if you want to zip around. You can get the Zürich Card here!
Where to Stay in Zurich, Switzerland
When visiting Zurich city, you can’t really go wrong with anywhere you stay (besides Langstrasee). These are a few hotels I personally recommend for your stay:
The Home Hotel Zürich | A design hotel member, this is in a great, with unique rooms. Book your stay here.
Sorell Hotel Zürichberg | Just little outside of the city, don’t let the distance on the map deter you. It’s an exceptional hotel, with great views of the city. You’ll feel far away from the city, but just a tram ride away. Book your stay here.

Is 24 hours enough time in Zurich, Switzerland?
That’s always a great question. I think one day in any given city is a little tight, but hey, sometimes we have to make things work! Zurich isn’t the most exciting place, and I wouldn’t suggest staying here more than 3 days. One day will allow you to see some of the top sights, and get a real taste of Switzerland! It’s easy to get around the city, and it’s not very big — so one full day will allow you to see plenty. It’s enough for me!

24 Hours in Zurich: Best Things To Do In One Day
#1. Start with breakfast by Lake Zurich
Breakfast is totally up to you and can depend on where you’re staying! But I highly recommend heading over to Babu’s by the Opera house for a fabulous breakfast. They have amazing pastries, coffee, as well as plated breakfast options you will love.

Alternatively, you can just grab a coffee across the street at ViCAFE or around the corner at MAME, two of the best local coffee spots in the city and start walking!
#2. Morning walk along the lake
After breakfast, head out for a leisurely stroll along Lake Zurich. This is one of my favorite ways to start the day. The views of the calm lake and Alps in the distance are unmatched, especially in the morning light. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and such a beautiful introduction to the city (before it gets busy!).
Walk along the promenade from Bürkliplatz toward the Old Town, watching the swans and sailboats. If it’s warm, you’ll see locals swimming from the wooden platforms along the lake.
*You’ll make a little loop by doing this walk, but you’ll find yourself walking circles around the city no matter which way you go.
#3. Wander Through Zurich Old Town (Niederdorf)
From the lake, make your way up Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s most famous shopping street. Even if you’re not in the mood to shop, it’s fun to walk along and people-watch as you make your way to the Old Town (Niederdorf).

Next, spend some time wandering the charming cobblestone streets of Old Town. Pop into Fraumünster to see the famous Chagall stained glass windows. They’re absolutely stunning in person and a must-see in Zurich!
Right across the river is Grossmünster — the iconic twin-towered church of Zurich, and if you’re feeling up for it, climb the tower for a panoramic view over the city.
Local Tip: Grab a Luxemburgerli macaron from Sprüngli at Paradeplatz, and then make sure to walk by Augustinergasse — my favorite street in Zurich!
#4. Take a coffee break at Lindenhof Hill
After exploring Old Town, make your way to Lindenhof Hill. If you need another coffee (hello jet lag) grab a takeaway coffee at the nearby ViCAFE. It’s perfect for a quality espresso on-the-go.
Then, head up to Lindenhof Park, a peaceful green space with views overlooking the Limmat River and rooftops of Old Town. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the slower pace of the city.
Local Tip: Don’t forget to refill your water bottle here — Zurich has some of the cleanest tap water in the world with fountains all around the city!
#5. Lunchtime! Where to eat midday in Zurich
I always think lunch in Zurich is best when you opt for a quick and casual spot. It gives you more time to keep exploring, and you can opt for something a little fancier, or longer, in the evening.
Here are my favorite spots:
- Zeughauskeller | If you’re feeling traditional, head to a classic beer hall with my favorite schnitzel in the city.
- Sternen Grill | has to be on this list because it’s a staple in the city. Now, it’s not a typical “restaurant”, but it’s a pillar of the city and gives you some traditional tastes. It’s located near the iconic Opera House and is the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch after shopping.
- Sesam Falafel | My favorite falafel spot in the city! It’s fresh, delicious, and super quick. There are some benches out front so you can take a break and enjoy.
- Gourmori | If you are craving quick Italian, this is the spot. You can get a freshly made mortadella sandwich with pesto on homemade focaccia to snack on while you walk. Or you can get a fresh bowl of pasta and sauce of the day.

#6. Ride the Polybahn and Visit Polyterrasse
After lunch, head to Central and hop on the cute red Polybahn funicular up to Polyterrasse. It’s a short ride and a fun, local experience.
At the top, enjoy incredible views over Zurich’s rooftops and the lake. This terrace is located right next to the ETH Zurich university, making it a popular study spot with locals.
Local Tip: Before you leave, check out a fun little hidden gem — Einstein’s locker! Right inside ETH Zurich, you can find the old locker that Albert Einstein used during his student days. You’ll have to explore to find it! It’s a quirky, off-the-radar stop for history lovers and a cool photo moment.
#7. Explore Zurich West & Im Viadukt
Hop on a tram and head to Zurich West, a cool industrial district turned trendy neighborhood. Walk through Im Viadukt, a row of boutique shops and restaurants built into old railway arches. Browse local shops or stop for a drink.
From there if you still have some time before your dinner reservations, check out Frau Gerolds Garten, an urban garden space with outdoor bars, food stalls, and a chill vibe. It’s awesome on a sunny afternoon.
#8. Dinner
Zurich’s dinner scene has something for every mood, just make sure to make reservations if you will be visiting Thursday-Sunday. Here are a few options for you:
- Silex | An upscale restaurant serving modern European dishes and a fantastic wine menu. This is a fancier spot, but definitely worth making a reservation at!
- Tsuru Tsuru | A cozy spot for fresh handmade udon noodles.
- Bar Lupo | My favorite spot for cozy Italian food. The homemade ragú is my all-time favorite! This is a casual spot.
- Volkshaus | This is a spot I suggest to everyone visiting Zurich, as it’s the perfect spot for elevated traditional Swiss food. They also have a variety of options for those with dietary preferences!
- Weisses Rössli | French-Mediterranean food with a twist (there is something for everyone here!). You’ll find elevated dishes in a super cute setting. Their outdoor seating is excellent, and perfect for a summer night.
#9. Nightcap with a View or a Cozy Cocktail Bar
Every trip should include ending the night at a cocktail bar and these are some of my favorites.
- Bar Le Philosphe | A quaint bar on a somewhat hidden street. Drinks are delicious, and the service is great.
- Widder Bar | Cozy cocktail bar in Old Town with an excellent whiskey selection.
- Kasheme | A vibrant cocktail (and vinyl) bar. There’s a lot going on inside – with multiple floors, bars, plus an epic dance room.
- Ora Bar | A simple spot for a great cocktail or glass of natural wine near old town and not far from Zurich HB (the main train station).
#10. Optional Evening Lake Walk
If it’s summertime or the weather’s nice, end your day with a gentle stroll along Lake Zurich. The promenade is beautifully lit at night, and it’s safe, peaceful, and so scenic.

Extra Things to Do in Zurich
If you’re the type who likes to pack in as much as possible or you happen to have an extra half-day, here are some bonus options:
- Take a Boat Ride on Lake Zurich | Boats leave from Bürkliplatz and do short scenic loops. It’s a relaxing way to see Zurich from the water.
- Uetliberg Mountain | The local “mountain” with hiking trails and the best panoramic views over the city and lake. An easy 20-minute train ride from the city center.
- Chinese Garden | A small but peaceful garden near the lake, perfect for a quiet stroll or photos.
- The Dolder Grand | A short trip uphill to see this historic luxury hotel. It’s deal for afternoon tea or cocktails with an amazing view over the city.
- Botanical Garden | Tucked away near the university, this is a quiet place to wander among rare plants and glasshouses.
- Giacometti Hall | A hidden gem inside a police station near Bahnhofquai. The painted stained-glass ceiling by Augusto Giacometti is stunning and totally unexpected. Free to visit—just check in at the front desk first.
Museums and Galleries Worth Checking Out
Zurich has a surprisingly good cultural scene. If you’re into museums and galleries, here are my top picks:
- Kunsthaus Zurich | One of the best art museums in Switzerland with works from Monet, Picasso, and Swiss artists.
- FOCUSS Museum (Museum für Gestaltung) | A cool design museum with rotating exhibitions.
- Swiss National Museum | Right next to the main train station, it covers Swiss culture and history in a castle-like building.
- Cabaret Voltaire | Birthplace of Dadaism, a quirky stop for art lovers.
- Lindt Chocolate Museum | A fun stop for chocolate lovers, with interactive exhibits, tasting stations, and the world’s largest chocolate fountain (plus unlimited chocolate eating!). Located just outside the city center, it’s easy to reach by tram.
My Favorite Shops to Get Souvenirs
No trip would be complete without some souvenirs! I always get items to bring to family and friends from Schweizer Heimatwerk in the city. They have two locations that I’ve include in the map above! It’s a great spot to get locally made items, an iconic Swiss cow bell or Swiss Army knife. When you are in old town, I also suggest stopping into Holzbueb, a bookstore that has an amazing selection of books, as well as little locally made items.
Zurich may be small, but it’s packed with beautiful views, incredible food, and charming streets. One day here feels both exciting and relaxing, and you’ll leave wanting to come back.
