Spring in Europe is an amazing time for travels as many places are less busy, but the weather can be unpredictable. Before you embark on your European adventure, it’s essential to pack smart and be prepared for the varying weather that await you. So, here’s your ultimate guide to packing for spring in Europe!
I grew up in California and even though I haven’t lived there for many years, I somehow still think February is when winter goes get put away and I can leave the house without a jacket.
WRONG.
I’ve gone on countless trips thinking I am leaving cold, dreary Zürich to only be freezing and splurging on a new jacket as soon as we land in our vacation destination. But is my history really to blame? When looking at blog posts for what to pack for a trip to Europe in spring you’ll find tons of dresses, sandals and airy outfits which 90% of the time couldn’t be more wrong.
Now, this guide is a very general springtime packing list, think places like – Greece, Italy, and Spain. Some might be warmer, some might be cooler, but from my own experience, these items are enough to pair for a cute, comfortable, and weather appropriate dress.

Weather in Europe in Springtime
Spring in Europe is a delightful mix of sunshine, showers, and crisp breezes. While southern Europe enjoys warmer temperatures, northern regions may still experience lingering coolness. Expect daytime temperatures to range from mild to warm, with occasional rain showers. Layers are key, as weather can change throughout the day.
Sicily in March is a bit cool, but still quite comfortable.

Layer Up: Pack lightweight clothing that can be layered for versatility. I love wearing a wool tank underneath tops to ensure I stay warm, as well as pairing t-shirts with sweaters.
Waterproof Gear: Don’t forget to pack a compact umbrella or a lightweight rain jacket to stay dry during unexpected showers.
Comfortable Shoes: European cities are made for walking, so pack comfortable walking shoes or sneakers to explore cobblestone streets and historic landmarks (especially when they might be slippery from rain!).
Travel-Friendly Accessories: A versatile scarf or shawl can add warmth on cooler days and double as a stylish accessory for evenings out. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle for staying hydrated on the go.
Pack Neutral Colors: This makes throwing on a sweater or jacket as the day goes by a breeze and you never have to worry about “clashing”.

Bottoms
A simple pair of jeans is an absolute must pack for spring in Europe. You will end up wearing jeans most days so bring a pair you love! I love these simple wide leg jeans because they go with all styles of shoes. You can also pack a simple pair of leggings and a black satin skirt to mix and match!
Tops and Sweaters for Layering
My go-to tops during spring always look like a simple t-shirt like this white one from COS or a cotton tank, paired with a sweater on top. I’ve had this black one from Everlane for years and love to use it as a layering piece.
I love wearing a sweater over a jacket for some texture in my outfit and added warmth! This was a perfect outfit in Rome in late April.
Jackets
Jackets are essential for spring in Europe and a good trench coat is an absolute must. I swap between this trench coat, a lightweight puffer jacket (I have this jacket in olive green and it’s one of my favorites), jean jacket and leather jacket. These are my staples!
These are two of my favorite jackets for Spring: trench coat and lightweight puffer jacket.
Comfortable Walking Shoes or Sneakers
Cute and comfortable walking shoes are key during the spring season! I often bring boots and tennis shoes so I have a mix of options for different weather. I adore matching my Dr. Martens with dresses or skirts, and opting for the popular Adidas Sambas for a laid-back, charming look with jeans and a sweater. I also love wearing my velcro Vegas for a cute, comfortable tennis shoe!
Waterproof Jacket or Umbrella
Don’t let a little rain dampen your day! I don’t love rain jackets, so I always keep this umbrella stashed in my bag. It’s the perfect size for travel and on the go days.
Scarf or Shawl
A scarf or shawl is a super easy item to pack and bring with you throughout the day. When we were in Rome last spring it was much colder than I expected, so a wide scarf helped me stay warm throughout the day.
Daypack or Crossbody Bag for Sightseeing
Keep your essentials close without sacrificing style. This bag is super trendy and you’ll see it all over everyone in Europe. Plus it comes in tons of colors! It’s perfect for daily adventures and keeping your hands free so you can snap a cute picture of your gelato or your cute latte. I am also obsessed with this black shoulder bag – I wear it constantly for an elevated look.
Other Europe Packing Essentials & Tips!
Travel Adapters: Don’t forget to bring travel adapters for your hair tools, phone chargers, and anything with a plug!
Packing cubes: I swear packing cubes are game changer for packing. They keep things nice and tidy throughout your trip and help you save space!
Toiletry case: In most cases when traveling in Europe your toiletries need to be in a clear plastic bag, which I HATE. They also have to be out of your suitcase when you go through security. It’s the most annoying thing ever, but to save myself some hassle I use this toiletry case.
Reusable Water Bottle: Restaurants charge for water so you might find yourself not drinking enough water during your trip. I always bring a reusable water bottle to refill at public fountains or at the hotel before we leave for the day so I stay hydrated.
Duffle bag and suitcase: Airlines have gotten a bit crazy when it comes to your bags and almost every time we’ve travelled in Europe in the last year they have weighed our carry on’s. So make sure to pack carefully to avoided the dreaded re-packing at the airport. Most carry on’s have to be 22 pounds (10kg). I love using my Dagne Dover duffle bag and Nortvi suitcase when traveling (but I don’t always bring both).
